We're all a little Nutty

A few days after my last post, Dillon beat the division State champ by 2 hundredths of a second in the 110 Hurdles!  Here is a screen shot of how tight it was at the finish line (he's the one in royal blue): Here is how the race progressed: It was awesome!! And then there are my STEM fair kids.  This was a week of competition at the regional level.  Ian took 3rd in his category (Earth and Environmental Science) at the Elementary fair: And Lizzie cleaned up at the Junior Division.  When they announced the 2nd place winners, she said, "There's no way I won first place.  I guess I didn't win anything."  Then they announced her name as the first place winner in her category (Physics, Astronomy & Mathematics)! We were surprised once more when she was announced as one in the top 10% of the projects that was selected to compete in the Broadcom Masters competition. It is that time of year again...the time that I spend more time than usual traveling to various performances and competitions.  Here's what we have so far: Lizzie and Ian both advanced from their school STEM fairs to the district STEM fair and now to the regional STEM fair.  Lizzie spent a lot of time sitting in an empty closet measuring how her body temperature raised the temperature of a room, then coming up with mathematical formulas to explain what happened.  Ian spent a lot of time measuring water flow at a spring in a nearby park, trying to determine how many people could get water there in case of emergency. Dillon made me laugh when he whipped out his melodica (like an accordion but you blow air into it with your mouth) during a choir performance last week.  He will do it again at Carnegie Hall in NYC in April.
