We're all a little Nutty

Well, we worked 12 hours yesterday, 4 hours of prep work on Tuesday, and 2 more hours this morning. I think Mckay got his required time. And, except for the fact that we ACCIDENTALLY made 2 extra pies, and that one batch that we forgot to add sugar to..., our pie day went well! All told, we made 45 pies. 41 ordered, 2 accidentally made extra, and 2 to take to Thanksgiving Dinner today. We ate one of the extra pumpkin pies for breakfast this morning, but are still waiting to taste the other ones. Hopefully they're good! As a shout out to the generosity of our neighbors, most people paid more than what we were charging since it was for the food bank. We will be able to take in nearly $300 next week. Very worthwhile.

The day before Thanksgiving has long been known in our home as "pie day" because we spend it making beautiful, tasty pies for Thanksgiving dinner. But, there are only SO MANY pies one family can eat, so we have figured out a way to make a "few" more... Mckay needed 6 more hours of service for the food bank for his Citizenship in the Community merit badge, so we came up with this great idea to take flyers around to our neighbors, selling pies for $5-7, which we will deliver on Wednesday, and then all the money will be donated to the food bank. Little did we know how big a hit the proposal would be. Long story short, we'll be making 41 pies over the next few days and are excited to be able to deliver ~$240 to the food bank when it's all done. Between making and handing out flyers and answering the phone non-stop, I think we've already got the extra hours he needed. Too bad we can't carry over hours for an eagle project in the future!! As the years pass, I am less enthusiastic about Halloween. Really the only merit I see in it is the creative outlet for kids coming up with a costume, and the occasional sewing experimentation required on my part. But, this year I at least enjoyed watching Ian discover the great thing that Halloween is to kids...CANDY. He was completely indifferent and uninterested when we tried to get him to dress up. But, finally, I layed it on the line and told him if he'd put on his cow costume that he could have some candy. That did it. He was scared by the room full of kids in costume at the church festival. He was overwhelmed by the throngs of costumed people -- big and little -- when we trick-or-treated at dad's work. He was unsure of the idea of walking around the neighborhood in costume. But, he finally joined in the fun wholeheartedly when he saw the CANDY!!! I now store his bucket on my highest furniture hutch in my room because he wants to eat it all day long.
