I've been thinking lately that I should make a list of things that I'm thankful my mom taught me, and then give it to her for Mother's Day. One of the items on the list would be that she taught me it was important to volunteer, specifically at church, school, and in the community. I unexpectedly received an award at a PTA meeting last night for volunteering at the elementary school. It made me happy that my efforts were noticed and appreciated, though that's certainly not why I help out. And, as a result, I can't stop thinking about WHY I volunteer to do so many random things. When each of us picks a task at the schools that we can do well and does it diligently, it helps kids in ways they wouldn't be helped because there just aren't enough hands to go around otherwise.
