Validation

Whenever we have a disagreement in our home (you know...the REALLY important kind, like over how to say the word "scriptures" in Spanish or whether I REALLY liked liverwurst sandwiches as a kid), we call my parents to prove that I am right, which I usually am.

Last night, however, we couldn't resolve it with a call to my parents because they wouldn't have known. I had recited a line from the Neil Diamond song "Heart Light" and Lee was surprised that I knew it and then he referred to it as the E.T. song. I had no idea what he was talking about and then he informed me that it was written in reference to the E.T. movie. I was sure he was wrong because I had always heard it as a love song (never mind that Neil Diamond is singing about being sad that "he" had to go away from him). Needless to say, a quick trip to Wikipedia and Youtube proved that I was, in fact, ignorant of this information.

So, now I seek validation. Am I the only child of the 80s who didn't know the connections that Neil Diamond had with E.T.? Or is this news to you, too?

    Sorry, I have to side with Lee on this one. They do play it as a love song, though. When you think about it in relation to ET it kind of seems a little strange. Oh well. Hollywood never talks to me about their plans.

Longest Summer Ever

  Yesterday officially marked the end of summer.  Phew!  Not only has it been hot and dry, but it has been full to the brim with adventure.  Here are a few of the highlights: In May, we had a few graduations and helped a child move to a new apartment... Then we fled the country to hike 84 miles around the Beara Peninsula in Ireland. While we were in Ireland, the kiddos left on a road trip across the country so one of them could say he'd been to all 50 states. A few weeks later, we did a road trip to the Wind Rivers, the Tetons, and Yellowstone (one of our kids got married in a small private ceremony while we were gone).. Then we flew to Portland (after a quick 4th of July breakfast) to have some adventures with extended family... 20 years ago

20 years ago, I would have shrieked with delight if Ty Detmer passed me on the trail to the Y. Yesterday, I just pointed excitedly after he walked past....with his teenage daughter. OK. After he was gone, I shrieked a little. And 20 years ago, I wouldn't have been afraid to go to a class reunion. Mine is tonight and I find myself terrified to go. I have built up so many negative emotions about my high school years that I don't want to subject myself to it again. But, as Sam reminds me, I can do hard things. And so, I am forcing myself to go and be brave and smile and pretend that I am not still extremely insecure! I hope that I have improved in other more noticeable ways over the past 20 years -- aside from a slightly greater level of maturity in regards to BYU football icon sightings. Maybe my head of grey hair will give me some credibility.

DOGS HATE ME!!

As if I need one more thing to have an irrational fear of!! I thought I was being a great citizen and mother this morning by walking to school instead of driving, and thus spending quality time with my son as we walked together. After dropping him off and heading back up the hill home, I passed by a house with a dog out front (which is nothing surprising since it seems that's the norm around this hick neighborhood). I made eye contact with the beast, slowed my pace a bit, and walked on the far side of the sidewalk past him. Nevertheless, he decided I looked threatening I guess, and ran around behind me and sunk his teeth into my meaty backside! I screamed in shock and fortunately he decided I didn't taste good (kind of like sharks, I guess). A few people driving past slowed down to see what happened, but then drove on.
