Deluxe Accommodations

In order to make our east coast adventure economical, we decided to camp as many nights as possible.  This required light weight, minimal gear so that we could fit it all in our suitcases on the plane...yet another reason we looked like hobos to the untrained eye.

3 nights in the D.C. area

Our first night of camping was amid the fireflies on state forest land outside of Ithaca.

We should have figured out a way to camp at this art museum at Cornell because this bench was cozy…

One night at a church campsite at Seneca Lake…we had the tent area to ourselves.

One night on state forest land in the Adirondacks which we affectionately remember as “the moth forest.”  (We arrived in the dark, pulled off in the middle of nowhere, and set our tents up on a soggy forest floor after it had rained all day and we had just seen a black bear.)

One night on state forest land in the Adirondacks, in between a swamp and our own private frontage to Lake Durant.  We slept surrounded by  a chorus of frogs.

The first picture is the suitcase that we named, “the pantry.”  The second picture is us swimming in the lake.  The third picture was our hobo camp.

One night at a church campsite near Joseph Smith’s birthplace.  We had the 100 acre site to ourselves.  Four of us slept in one of those small cabins you see behind Mckay.  The other three slept in a tent.

One night in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  We can’t decide if we liked it more because the campground was named “Jigger Johnson,” or if it is because it was beautiful, or if it is because it had toilets.

Two nights in Acadia National Park.  The campground became a fairy playland for the younger kids.  Acadia was beautiful!  We were sad to figure out the second evening that the “dew” dripping onto our uncovered tent screen periodically was actually from birds.

Two nights at a hotel near Boston.  Hooray for a pool, a shower, and laundry facilities!

Two nights on Cape Cod.  Frogs croaked all night and we were enchanted to be back in fire fly territory again.  These were our last nights camping.  I don’t think these kids look very comfortable, but they were too tired to care.

One night at my aunt and uncle’s house in New Jersey, enhanced by a visit from my cousin, her husband, and Ian’s new friend, Jackson.

Two nights in NYC, at the Comfort Inn a few blocks away from Times Square.  We were on the 15th floor and Ian begged to take a picture of “all the taxis” below his window.  His photographer’s eye captured only 5 of them.
